SSEAYP Singapore Contingent Training - Part 2

In this post, I would be talking about the various committees and their responsibility. For the 42nd batch of the Singapore Contingent, we have the Corporate Communication, Cultural, Exhibition, Logistics and Sports committees. There is not fair distribution in the numbers of members, as it's more of a personal choice. On top of these committees, there was the National Leader (NL), Youth Leader (YL), Assistant Youth Leader (AYL) and treasurers.

Let's start with the easiest first:

在这篇文章中,我将讨论各个委员会的责任。 我们有企业传播,文化,展览,物流和体育委员会。 除了这些委员会,我们也有国家领导人(NL),青年领袖(YL),助理青年领袖(AYL)和财务主管。

National Leader

National Leader is appointed by the SIS board and NYC. Technically, he/she is the advisor of the contingent.

Youth Leader and Assistant Youth Leader

These 2 leadership positions are voted by the contingent members. Practically, they have to take care of everything and anything, including managing people's expectation and emotions. Moreover, the dynamic of the contingent varies greatly. The age ranged from 18 to 30 years old. There are working adults and students. All of our backgrounds are very different. Naturally, there would be conflict. On top of this role, they are also a member of one of the committee.

What is the first thing that came to mind when you think about treasurers? MONEY! They took care of the contingent funds and helped every single one of us with the reimbursement.

Corporate Communication

The corporate communication team has the luxury to enjoy more time on board the ship and during the programme, as the bulk of their responsibilities are during the pre-departure period. The team would have to take care of the sponsorships, collaterals, uniforms, photo shoot, the image of the contingent, public relations, marketing and so much more. In simple terms, we aim to make everything looked good and be shameless when asking for sponsorship. I was in this team as I like marketing and design. I was also the Chairman of this team. I would talk more about this in another post.

The logistics team pretty much have to take care of the contingent's logistics, luggage (yes! I am referring to our personal luggage) and welfare. During the training period, the committee made sure that we were well fed. The team catered food and at times sought sponsorship for the food too. They even had to take care of our packing list, provide advice on our packing so that we do not need to lug our luggage in Japan. The most important part of their job is to ensure that most of the logistics need to be packed nicely before and even after the trip. We have to return some of the items. Hence, this team had an important role to answer for these items when we returned back on the sunny island.

The name of this team is slightly misleading, even though they did drag us out to do some sports, eg. running and dragon boat. (And, those are not my favourite times.) The team would need to create contingent cheers, gangway cheer, show us the games and dance, teach us the SSEAYP songs and many more. Honestly, you would never know of gangway cheer until you joined the programme. Basically, I would feel like they are the team that is supposed to make activities seemingly fun.

Like the Sports committee, the team name is slightly misleading. The team had to take care of the exhibition about Singapore in Japan. The purpose of the display was to showcase the culture of Singapore so that the youths have a better understanding of the little red dot. The team also had to produce a summary of the culture of Singapore and other countries. At times, they also had to engage speakers to give us simple language courses. They too have to create a contingent handbook for the 27 of us. The manual consist of all the cheers, song lyrics, and essential notes that we would need to remember on board the ship.

The Cultural Team main purpose is to come up with an hour-long performance. The performance had to showcase Singapore too. It was not easy. They have to create the script, choreograph the dance, source for pieces of music, create the background images for the performance and even sourcing for costumes. There were also short performances to take care off too. On board the ship, there were also last minute rehearsals to dance the night away.

Last but not least, there is an informal Executive Committee, which is also known as the EXCO. This committee consisted of all the Chairperson of the various teams, YL, AYL and NL. This team discussed on all the pressing matters such as scheduling of timetable, hair colour, and other nitty-gritty details. It's not a fun team to be in.

As I am writing this post, I have to say that we are a group of talented people. We managed to score sponsorships! Thanks to our resourceful AYL and other members. Most of us contributed to something. Some of us pulled string to help with the choreography of the dance. Some were talented to do the photography, videography, scriptwriting and etc. We managed to create uniforms, conduct photo shoots, do a voiceover and even provide copyediting. Honestly, all of these activities would not be a success without the help of every individual.

Honestly, even until today, I don't know how we did it, but we managed to go against all the odds.

And, that's all for today!

SSEAYP Singapore Contingent Training - Part 1

I was an ambassador for Singapore for the Ship for Southeast Asia and Japanese Youth Programme in 2015. In this post, I would be sharing with you about the training that we had to go through. I have previously written on the Best memories of SSEAYP, application process and the first interview. Feel free to read them if you have not.

#throwback to 2015

If I remembered correctly, all of us first met in a meeting room at National Youth Council. It was nice to see to some of the familiar faces. At the same time, it also marked the beginning of our training. There were hardly icebreakers and BAM! We talked about the creation of the various committees. There were Corporate Communication, Sports and Welfare, Cultural, Logistics and Exhibition teams. We have to decide which portfolio to participate in on that day. We have to appoint our treasurers as well. Then, we don't really know one another, so we have to trust one another to make things worked.

Now, this is the real deal! We were told that training would be taking place 4 days a week; 2 weekdays of 3 hours each and 2 full weekends for 2 months. There were hardly any "off days" except a couple of public holidays. All of us were expected to give our 100%. I did not. I tried to slack a little once in a while.

The beginning was not easy. I am not going to fluff the training experience of my batch. I have a Full-Time job then, and I was handling a new portfolio as well. After work, I have to rush for the training. No doubt, I was under a lot of stress. I am getting sick easily then because my body is not used to all these stress. I did think of giving up a few times, but I tried to press on. The reason why I was so motivated to push on was that I really wanted to go to Japan and I would not be getting a refund for the SGD 900.

Frankly speaking, I wasn't the only one who was feeling the pain. There were a few dropouts, as their priorities were in other aspects of life. There's nothing shameful or wrong about it. Those who did not drop out also have a life outside of training. It was the motivation from one another, the responsibility to get things done or individual gains that sort of makes everything happened.

It was tough.

However, we did it. We reaped what we sowed. We enjoyed our time during the programme. The best part is we were a closed knitted family. We went through the tough times together. We did things together. We solved problems. We gossiped. We played. The time spent bought us closer. This relationship is priceless.

Honestly, I am happy that I did not give up. I make a few terrific friends who I regard as my pillars. We know each other so well that it's perfectly fine to just be your true self, without the makeup on.

That's was the training experience that I had. I hope I managed to give you a rough idea of what's the training is like in Singapore. From what I knew about other countries training were that, they had a shorter training period. The participating youths were selected from various city or provinces. It was hard for them to gather. Hence, they have camps instead. If I remembered correctly, some countries had 2 weeks of intensive training. I have no idea which is the lesser of the 2 evils; having the training spread out for an extended period of time or cramped everything together.

I hope this post was not too heavy. Moreover, this is my personal experience. If you are interested, I will urge you to speak to a few more youths to get a clearer picture. I would defiantly be sharing more about SSEAYP, so stay tuned!

Inaniwa Yosuke @ WISMA

There is a Japanese Steet at Level 4 of Wisma Atria Shopping Centre. This was the first time that I went there, and we went to dine in Inaniwa Yosuke. There was a one for one promotion before 7 pm. Hence, 2 set menus cost $18.90 before taxes. I do not know when would the promotion end. Regardless, there is also a 10% discount for everyone who signs up as a member on their app. This is limited to the first time that you used the app.

Let's now focus on the food. We ordered the Sliced Pork and Curry Rice bowl set menus, and we decided to have 1 hot and cold udon to try as well. The udon is the star. The udon is not your usual thick and chewy type. It's still chewy, but it's thinner than normal. On top of that, there's a wheat aftertaste to it. The hot udon is served in a bowl with a very light broth. The broth is pretty much tasteless to me. It's not something that I enjoyed. The cold udon is so much better than the hot one. You eat the cold udon just like cold soba. Dipped the udon into the sauce and slurped the udon.

Now, let's move on to the rice bowl. Let's talked about the curry rice bowl. It's sweet and slightly peppery. They are very generous with the sauce, so much as that every grain of rice was coated with sauce. Honestly, I felt like I was having porridge and maybe because of their generosity, the dish is too rich for my liking. I had to keep drinking tea to wash down the taste.

Photo 6-11-18, 9 46 28 PM (2).jpg

As for the sliced pork rice bowl, I decided to not eat the rice as there was too much carbohydrate for a meal. The pork slices were very thin, similar to those that you would use for steamboat or Shabu Shabu. Surprisingly, the pork tasted sweet. I had to add in the grated ginger, but it didn't help to balance the taste.

Overall, I am quite disappointed by all the dishes, but on second thought I am someone who prefers ramen over udon. On top of that, the restaurant is famous for their tempura set. I did not try that as I could not take prawns. Hence, my review may be biased. Nevertheless, if I have to choose 1 dish that I like, it would be the cold udon. That's the most enjoyable dish that I have out of all the dishes, and I would definitely recommend the cold udon only.

Let me know if you have a different opinion about this restaurant. Feel free to comment and share the post. That’s all for now.

Flying Through NYC

It had always been on my bucket list to take a helicopter. I wondered what it is like to be in one. New York City has a special space in my heart. Hence, during my second time to the big apple in 2017. I made it an absolute must to take a helicopter ride in this magical city.

There are a lot of helicopter tours available in NYC. There are equally expensive. Just Google and there would be plenty of options. It's best to find one that matches your budget.

cute smile.gif

My friend and I decided to go with It covered most of the attractions, and the ride is about 20 minutes. It cost around 240 USD excluding flight fees. Here are some tips, check out Groupon and Viator for the offers. I remembered booking our tour via Viator. Secondly, make good use of your New York Pass or New York Sightseeing Pass! You can quickly get about a 15% discount when you book the tour with these passes.

When we were in Big Apple, we decided to bring forward the ride by a day because we were around the area. Secondly, the day happened to be very clear, and weather forecast predicted that it's going to rain the next day. Thank goodness we did that. We were fortunate. We managed to change the reservation. We got a clear view from high above. And guessed what, it did rain on the next day. I was really thankful! I can't imagine my disappointment if I went on a rainy day.

However, I did have a slightly sad experience, as I was not given the window seat. Seats are assigned as it's part of the safety procedure. They need to spread out the weight evenly so that the helicopter would not be lopsided. I decided to put my phone away and immerse myself with the experience. The view was spectacular.

That was not the ideal seat as you can't get to take as many photos or videos as you wish. You can't see much at times because your partners on both sides would be blocking the views with their cameras. It sucks, but you could still enjoy the scene and the ride by looking around. Personally, I think that the best seat is the beside the driver. Nothing is blocking your view. You can see everything.

Anyway, if you wish to take the tour during the slight breezy day, fret not! This helicopter ride had the smoothest departure and landing. It was way better than some of the plane flight that I had taken. I am a sensitive person, and I experienced motion sickness easily. However, I do not have an issue with this.

New York Pass New York Sightseeing Pass 预。

Here’s a short clip of my trip in New York City in 2017.

That’s all for today!

Man Man Unagi Japanese Restaurant @ DUO

I always wanted to give this restaurant a try because there is a queue outside it even on regular days. When Brenda asked me out for my birthday, I decided that this is the perfect chance for me to give Man Man a chance. (Thank you Brenda!) Honestly, I was pretty excited.

On the day that I visited the restaurant, there was no queue. The queue started to form during dinner time. Brenda and I arrived maybe 15 minutes earlier than the dinner crowd. I am happy not to queue. Both of us ordered the unagi and salmon belly rice bowl. Personally, I prefer a mix of meat.

On top of that, this is one of the cheaper options on the menu. The speciality of this restaurant is the Unagi. Hence, the price point of the food here is slightly steep. Moreover, I observed that the restaurant at DUO is somewhat small, I think this may be one of the reasons that contribute to the queue.

The uniqueness of the dining experience is that you could enjoy your meal in 3 different ways. Ask the service crew for help if it's your first time dining there. They would suggest that you divide the bowl into quarters so that you could try the 3 different styles and have 1 more portion of your favourite choice.

First, you can try the original version; meaning you could have the rice bowl as it's served to you. I could taste the salmon and unagi, but there's nothing impressive about it. Personally, this option was pretty bland.

Next, I added in the garnishes and shredded seaweed. This option was better, as the garnishes added an extra crunch and fragrance. I like this.

For the third part, I added in the broth, which was yummier than the soup. Overall, it looked and tasted like porridge. I would recommend this on days that you feel sick and want something tasty.

It's apparent that I preferred the second method. However, I don't find anything special about the food here. The unagi, which is the star of the dish, tasted pretty average. I don't see the hype. I doubt I would crave for this. Nevertheless, there are some rumours that the branch in Chinatown served better food. Hence, if you wish to try Man Man Unagi, I would encourage you to go to the one in Chinatown.

Comment below and let me know if you have tried this before. Feel free to share the post.

How to Apply for the SSEAYP Programme and Survive the First Interview?

I was in need of a break and a change in 2015. I decided to apply for the Ship for Southeast Asia and Japanese Youth Programme, fondly known as SSEAYP. I remembered vividly that I sought advises about the application process from Anthony. He was a former participant of the programme and sat on the SSEAYP International Board then. He happened to be a facilitator for one of the plans on board too. He advised that it would be good to have a testimonial to go with the application. I supported my file with 2 letters of recommendation; 1 from Anthony and 1 from my former boss.

I would suggest attending the information session as well to have a better understanding of the latest installment. During the sharing session, there was the emphasis on “flying the Singapore flag high”, “you are representing the country” and “once in a lifetime experiences”. It may be a good idea to use the SSEAYP language too. This acts like a sprinkle of fairy dust in your statement as it sounds more personal.

cute smile.gif

Here’re some tips for the application process:

1. Be Neat!

I remembered using Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat Reader to fill up the Application form repeatedly. It was a painful process as the file was not user-friendly. I printed out the document and used my neatest handwriting to fill up the form, and that was 3 years ago. I hope that you could now easily use software to fill up the form. Nothing pisses off an administrator if he/she can’t read what you are writing.

2. Check your documents before submitting!

Check that you have all the documents before submitting. You may have to forfeit your chance for any missing documents. You may want to note that it’s not the administrator's responsibility to tell you that you have missed out a paper. Your application may just be rejected.

Before the first interview, we were told to dress comfortably, preferably in pants and covered shoes. This is an obvious clue that there would be some hands-on activities during the interview. Around 50 youths turned up on the day of the event, and indeed we were split into teams for team bonding exercises. We even had to come up with a performance by the end of the day. In the midst of all the activities, the National Leader (NL) and NYC representatives would be giving you eye power, in other words, observing you. I would assume you know what to do, right?

The interview is similar to almost every other job interviews. Why did you join the programme? How could you contribute to the team? Blah blah blah... They could direct a question to the party too. The keyword here is TEAMWORK! Learn to agree to disagree.

Anyway, every country has different sets of criteria and ways to shortlist the ambassadors for the programme. Whatever that I wrote in this post is about my batch only. I am sharing my experience. From what I heard from other youths were that, for some countries, only 1 person would be shortlisted to represent their province/city/state. Over the years, even the format changed. For some years, only the finalists are required to go for the teambuilding exercise. Time has changed.

Application for SSEAYP opens annually. In Singapore, the programme is administrated by the National Youth Council (NYC). Details are available on their website.

Hope this post has been useful to you. Feel free to comment and share the post.

Best Memories of SSEAYP

I am here to share about my experience about the Ship for Southeast Asia and Japanese Youth Programme (SSEAYP). It is opened to youths, age 18 - 30, from Southeast Asia and Japan. It's similar to an exchange programme, but everyone would stay on the ship, fondly known as Nippon Maru, and cruise over the deep blue ocean. Every year, each of these countries would send around 27 youths. Of course, we get to alight from the ship and visit institutions and homestay.

I was from the 42nd batch, and I represented Singapore. Psst... I joined this programme 3 years ago. SSEAYP was indeed an interesting and fun one to go!

Why did I join this programme?

The number 1 reason why I joined SSEAYP was due to JAPAN! I had always wanted to visit Japan but never had the chance. The total cost of travelling to Japan can be quite hefty. Hence, when I knew that I only need to pay SGD900, and I get to visit Japan and other SEA countries. I am sold! It’s a perfect deal! Secondly, I needed a break. Everything fell into place nicely. Hence, I decided to submit in my application.

Being in the middle of nowhere

One of the great things about this programme is that it's hosted on a ship. Hence, maybe 60% of the time, you would wake up in the middle of nowhere. Every other day, you get to listen to the sound of the wave, enjoy the sea breeze, sunrise, sunset and all the beauty that nature could draw. I managed to catch the milky way too on one of the nights. It’s also a great chance to imagine yourself as the lead in “Eat Pray Love”.

Making new friends from different countries

The best part of the programme is that you would get to make new friends. No doubt you would have fun with another. Some of the people who you met on board may turn out to be a friend for life.

These were some of my best memories in SSEAYP and in life. Everyone would earn different experiences. I would love to hear from you what’s your best memories in life. Feel free to write to me or comment in the link below.

I would be sharing more about SSEAYP so stay tuned!
